After last week’s surprise rainfall, Mumbai and parts of Maharashtra may have to brace for more thundershowers as Cyclone Maha moves towards Gujarat.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of “heavy rain at isolated places” for November 6 for Palghar, Thane, Nandurbar, Dhule and Nashik, following the movement of tropical Cyclone Maha towards Gujarat at a maximum speed of 100-110 kmph. Thundershowers are expected in Mumbai on November 6 and 7.

Light to moderate rain at most places with isolated heavy spells are very likely over north Konkan (Palghar and Thane districts) and northernmost districts of Madhya Maharashtra (Nashik, Dhule, Nandurbar districts) on November 6,” read the warnings issued by the weather department.

The IMD has also advised fisherfolk to not venture into sea along the north Maharashtra coast on November 5 and 6. The fisherfolk out at sea have been advised to return. The weather department has also issued a warning about squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, likely along and off Maharashtra coast from November 6 morning. The wind speed is likely to increase 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph from November 6 evening along and off Palghar and Thane districts for the next 12 hours.

Festive offer

According to the cyclone alert issued by the IMD, Cyclone Maha is very likely to intensify further till November 5 morning and weaken gradually thereafter. It is very likely to move north-westwards slowly during the next 24 hours, recurve east-northeastwards and move rapidly thereafter. The cyclone is very likely to cross Gujarat coast between Diu and Porbandar as severe cyclonic storm around midnight of November 6 and early hours of November 7. This will lead to extremely heavy rain on the Gujarat coast and isolated heavy spells for extreme north Maharashtra districts such as Dahanu, Palghar, Jalgaon, Nandurbar, Nashik and Dhule. Adjoining parts of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada could also receive thunderstorms while cloud cover with light rain in parts of the Mumbai region is expected on November 6.

Maximum temperature on Monday was a notch below normal at 32.9 degrees Celsius, recorded by IMD’s Santacruz observatory, while minimum temperature was a notch above normal at 23.6 degrees Celsius. A partly cloudy sky has been predicted for Tuesday.
