Mob kills Malda man for tethering cows near road
Malda: A 42-year-old man died at Goloktola village after a group of allegedly drunk youths attacked him with rods and sticks on Saturday night for tethering his cows to roadside posts. Three persons have been arrested so far.
Ajoy Kumar Das had tethered his cows to roadside posts, which inconvenienced pedestrians and bikers at night. A group of youths asked him to take away the cows but Das refused to do so.
This led to an altercation, after which local youth Chiranjit Mandal, his friends and relatives thrashed Das and left him unconscious.
Das was rescued by relatives and taken to Bangitola Hospital and then to Malda Medical College and Hospital. He died on Sunday night. Police sent the body for post mortem and began an investigation.
Das’ mother lodged a com- plaint against six persons. Three youths — Basudeb Mandal, Bhudeb Mandal and Kajal Mandal — were arrested and produced in court on Monday. However, main accused Chiranjit is absconding. Mothabari police station OC Somjit Mallik said: “A group of villagers attacked Das. He was previously suffering from some ailment and could not bear the torture.”
