Renovated courtroom of Punjab and Haryana HC sees many visitors on first day

The courtroom, where matrimonial disputes and election matters are mainly heard at present in accordance with the fifth division bench’s roster, became a sightseeing for many on Monday even as the judicial work mostly remained affected due to the lawyers strike called against the Tis Hazari Court incident in Delhi where the bar members clashed with police officers.

In the renovated courtroom here, the old iron chairs and the wooden railing which separated them from the sofas usually seated by the lawyers has been removed. A number of sofas, designed by Pierre Jeanneret, have been placed together for seating of the lawyers, litigants and other visitors in rows. A wide space now lies vacant on the left side since the separate path created using the wooden railing for lawyers has also been removed.

The court dais, which used to be a bit elevated, has been brought down in height and also a witness box has been placed on one side. The room has also been painted afresh.

Tapestry, which is otherwise old and stained in other courts, placed in the courtroom 6 at background of the chairs set for judges presents a bright look now with the bright white light coming from the sides complementing it.

The designs, whose sample lies with the high court, are based on Le Corbusier’s Modular, which he used to organise the entire Capitol Complex and give dimensions to all its buildings. The tapestry is said to have been restored with help from foreign experts.
