Katihar: Criminal carrying Rs 50,000 reward on head arrested

The special task force (STF) on Monday arrested notorious gangster Md Zafar Alam (38) from Katihar and sent him to jail. He was evading arrest in nine cases, including the Rs50 lakh loot from a cash van under Kadwa police station area in the district.

PATNA: The special task force (STF) on Monday arrested notorious gangster Md Zafar Alam (38) from Katihar and sent him to jail. He was evading arrest in nine cases, including the Rs50 lakh loot from a cash van under Kadwa police station area in the district. Alam, who carried a reward of Rs50,000 on his head, was also wanted in connection with the murderous attack on Manihari DSP M H S Fakri and three other policemen at his native village Narayanpur in Katihar on September 29.
Acting on a tip-off, the STF with the help of the district armed police, raided Alam’s rented accommodation at Madheli Partitola under Falka police station area in Katihar early Monday morning and nabbed him.
Alam’s wife Begham Khatoon was also arrested and sent to jail in connection with the attack on the police team at their village.
Falka SHO Roopak Ranjan said Alam was arrested in the cash loot case on September 29, but his supporters had got him freed from police custody after opening fire and attacking the police team. The SHO said raids were on to nab other members of the gang, whose names Alam disclosed during interrogation.
Apart from DSP Fakri, three other police personnel injured in the mob attack were identified as Nawal Kishore (inspector), Giriraj Kumar (SI) and Raju Ram (ASI). They were seriously injured in the stone pelting by the mob at Alam’s village Narayanpur.
Earlier, Katihar SP Vikas Kumar told reporters that Alam was wanted in nine criminal cases and the government had announced a reward of Rs50,000 for his arrest. “Alam’s arrest is a great relief for the district police,” the SP said.
In another case, a Mumbai police team arrested five persons from East Champaran district for their alleged involvement in a bank robbery on October 28 last year. Earlier, one Rohit Kumar of Maharajganj in Saran district was arrested by the Mumbai police.
