Chirag Paswan becomes new president of LJP

37 years old Chirag was the LJP’s central parliamentary board chairman and has been key decision maker in the party in recent years.

“In his new responsibility he will work for the expansion of the party and strengthening of the organization and will raise the issues of youths.” said Chirag who was present at the press conference.

A graduate in computer science, Chirag had acted in a Bollywood movie- ‘Miley Naa Miley Hum’ which didn’t do very well on the box office. He became Member of Parliament first time in 16th Lok Sabha by winning Jamui reserved seat in Bihar in 2014 and again in 2019.

LJP, currently a constituent of ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), was formed on 28th October 2000 after Paswan broken away from the Janata Dal (United). Currently LJP has 6 members of parliament and 2 members of assembly in Bihar where the party has a strong base among Dalits.

Eight times Lok Sabha MP, 73 years Paswan hold the post of the president of LJP for almost two decades.

“He will now provide the guidance to the party.”, Paswan said.

Paswan has passed the baton to his son Chirag at a time when party is bracing itself for Bihar assembly election due next year.

Before the Chirag’s elevation to the national president post, LJP has appointed other youth leaders to key posts ahead of Bihar assembly election which include newly elected MP from Samastipur Prince Raj as the state president of LJP for Bihar and 34 years old Nawada MP Chandan Singh as the state president of LJP Youths wing.

Prince won the recently concluded Samastipur Lok Sabha by-poll by defeating Congress candidate Ashok Kumar by more than 1.02 lakh votes. Chirag was given responsibility of the by-election. This seat was vacant after the sudden demise of his uncle and Prince’s father Ram Chandra Paswan.

The immediate task at Chirag’s hand will be strengthening of party organization in Bihar as well as preparation for upcoming assembly poll in neighboring Jharkhand where party performed miserably in last election. LJP contested just one seat and forfeited deposits.

Asked about Jharkhand assembly election, Chiarag replied, “LJP has demanded six assembly seats in the state. This has been conveyed in writing to BJP national President Amit Shah, BJP working president JP Nadda and the Chief Minister of Jharkhand.”

“So far the discussions have been positive”, he added.

As an MP, Chirag has been part of several parliamentary committees in sixteenth Lok Sabha. Presently he is a member of standing committee on personnel, public grievances, law and justice.
