A 19-year-old student died after he was shot at point-blank range by his friend at the latter’s residence in Vengadamangalam village near Tambaram in Kancheepuram district on Tuesday afternoon.

The police said Mukesh, was studying in a private polytechnic in Vandalur. He visited the house of his friend Vijay, 20, who was working as a delivery boy in a food delivery service company.

Reports suggested that they had a quarrel while watching a video on the mobile phone. Vijay suddenly pulled out a pistol and shot Mukesh in the head. Hearing a sudden thud, Vijay’s family members and neighbours rushed to his room, as Vijay fled from the spot.

Mukesh, who was profusely bleeding, was rushed to a private medical college hospital in a critical condition. From there, he was taken to the Government Chromepet Hospital and later referred to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

He died on the way to the hospital and his body was sent for post-mortem, sources said.

Kancheepuram District Superintendent of Police D.Kannan visited the scene of crime and held an inquiry. The Thalambur police registered a case and are investigating.

“We were not able to find out the motive since only two persons were inside the room,” said a senior police officer. He added that the assailant allegedly used a crude weapon.

The SP said special teams have been constituted to trace the accused.
