LUCKNOW: The department of surgical gastroenterology at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) played good Samaritan on Tuesday and conducted a free liver transplant on a poor farmer from Amethi.
Gyanendra Pratap Singh, 41, was suffering from liver cirrhosis and prognosis wasn’t favourable without a transplant. While his wife Vandana, 39, decided to donate the organ, the department helped the patient in applying and procuring financial assistance under the chief minister’s Asadhya Rog Yojana.
Normally, a liver transplant costs around Rs 30 lakh at a private hospital while the expenses at KGMU is around Rs 8 lakh, said head of department professor Abhijit Chandra who led the team of surgeons comprising Dr Vivek Gupta, Dr Vishal Gupta and Dr Pradeep Joshi. After a 12-hour operation, both donor and recipient are doing fine, Chandra added. This was the eighth liver transplant at KGMU since March 2017.
