Sultanpur Lodhi saw a record footfall of pilgrims on Tuesday with three lakh visiting the small town on a single day.

Even in the evening, the road from Shaheed Udham Singh Chowk to Gurudwara Ber Sahib was completely choked.

Sultanpur Lodhi saw a record footfall of pilgrims on Tuesday with three lakh visiting the small town on a single day. The huge rush, however, choked the entire city and created an over 10 km traffic jam on Sultanpur Lodhi-Talwandi Chaudhrian road.

With buses carrying devotees between designated parking lots and Gurdwara Ber Sahib stuck for hours, several were seen getting down midway to walk several kilometres.

“There were lakhs of devotees and perhaps the highest ever on any single day in the small town, which has a population of just 18,000,” said SGPC officials at Gurudwara Ber Sahib.

Tuesday saw a rush as the Nagar Kirtan from Nankana Sahib culminated its 96-day journey in the town. Also, Punjab Chief Minister was in town to launch week-long celebrations with commencement of a ‘Sehaj Path’.

Festive offer

“Due to the Nagar Kirtan moving on the main Kapurthala-Sultanpur Lodhi road, the entire traffic was diverted to Talwandi road on which four parallel lanes of vehicles got stuck in worst bottlenecks,” said a senior police officer.

Policemen were mute spectators as several elderly people and children walked on jam packed roads with great difficulty to reach their vehicles in the outer parking lots because the buses carrying them were not moving at all.
