‘Airbnb for compute’: CPUcoin pays users for their idle computer power

CPUcoin, a developer of a sharing economy for cloud computing power, today announced the launch of its system for paying people for their idle processor time.

The first CPUcoin-earning Compute Generation Network miner turns these distributed computational resources into a massive distributed, scalable cloud network.

The problem, as CPUcoin sees it, is that a vast amount of computer processing unit, or CPU, power goes unused. Consumers purchase millions of new internet-connected devices that sit idle most of the day.

That’s a colossal missed opportunity that could be turned to the benefit of the information technology industry and users could make money while their devices are idle.

The company calls itself the “Airbnb” for CPU and graphics processing unit computing power that uses these idle CPU chips in order to provide an infrastructure for deploying and scaling decentralized services and Dapps, or decentralized applications running in distributed computers.

Under CPUcoin’s vision, this technological innovation would also slow energy consumption by reducing new computing spend – by using this highly distributed network of devices that are already using power – and at the same time bolster cloud connectivity.

“CPUcoin can drastically reduce cloud infrastructure costs by creating a new sharing economy for unused CPU/GPU power, and enables anyone to install a miner client to start collecting cryptocurrency for their unused computing time,” said Sean Barger, managing director of CPUcoin.

The mining software is compatible with Windows 7 through Windows 10, tablet devices and Windows Server 2012 to 2019.

Users can start earning CPU, the native utility token of CPUcoin, at a rate of 1 CPU every 24 hours. It’s possible to track earnings through any wallet partner that supports CPUcoin. As the native currency of the CPUcoin platform, CPUs will also be used to pay for the consumption of services. They are also exchangeable for other currencies on the ProBit exchange, which currently includes USD Tether and Korean won.

Enterprise developers will be able to use CPUcoin’s cloud compute infrastructure-as-a-service to deploy, manage and execute compute services that will then be distributed across the network. According to the company, users can receive more than five times the computational throughput of traditional cloud providers such as AWS Lambda.

“It’s truly a win-win-win for consumers, developers and enterprises creating and using cloud-based apps and DApps, with the added benefit of slowing the energy footprint by reducing the need for cloud growth,” Barger said.

To push the adoption of the network, CPUcoin partnered with longtime media processing company Equilibrium. Equilibrium’s decentralized service will run on CPUcoin’s Compute Generational Network under the name of “MediaRich.” It currently powers Fortune 500 companies including Walmart Stores Inc., Adidas AG, Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. and the Department of Energy.

Equilibrium will use CPUcoin’s CGN to run the first DService, or distributed service, that will provide a services layer needed to power the company’s MediaGen family of DApps and client applications. The MediaGen DService operating on the CGN will perform near-real-time request handling for image, animation, font audio and video dynamic processing and rendering operations.

The CPUcoin CGN enterprise mining software that will use CPU cycles on an idle machine and connect them into the cloud service network is generally available today and can be downloaded here.
