Chennai: Man wanted in several robbery cases held

He was allegedly involved in several cases of stealing valuables in Chennai, Ramanathapuram, Madurai and Sivagangai districts.

Chennai: A 34-year-old man with over 15 robbery cases against him in Tamil Nadu, was arrested here on Thursday and 30 sovereigns of jewellery were recovered from him. John Bosco (34) , a native of Muthugulathur, Ramanathapuram was arrested from Pudupet, police said.

He was allegedly involved in several cases of stealing valuables in Chennai, Ramanathapuram, Madurai and Sivagangai districts. The police noted that his usual modus operandi was to loiter in a locality looking for locked houses to break into. He would also leave the city immediately with the loot to dispose of the stolen items in his home town.

According to reports, on September 8 this year, around 117 sovereigns of jewels and `30 lakh in cash were burgled from the house of one Immanuel Jayaseelan, a financier in Pammal. The incident happened in a gap of just 2 hours between 9 am and 11 am when the entire family had gone to a nearby church for Sunday prayer.

The family discovered that the burglars had gained entry through the backdoor and escaped with the jewels and cash. The Shankar Nagar police registered a case and launched a search for the burglar. A special team was formed after the burglary was reported and police combed the CCTV footage and found a man moving suspiciously in the locality.

Based on the signals from his mobile phone, police zeroed in on him. He was rounded up by the Shankar Nagar police on Thursday in his in-law’s house in Pudupet, Anna Salai. John was married to a girl in Pudupet five days ago, police said. They also recovered 30 sovereigns of gold from him. Investigations are on.
