Delhi: Jamia student stabbed by two pickpockets in cluster bus

The victim’s brother Ansar Ahmed said Shah had identified one of the accused as the same pickpocket who had stolen his phone a while ago and was trying to avoid being robbed again when he was targeted.

On his way to college, a 23-year-old BEd student from Jamia Millia Islamia was stabbed, allegedly by two pickpockets, inside a cluster bus Wednesday noon.

According to police, the victim, Mohd Asad Shah, and his friend tried to resist a pickpocketing attempt by the accused when the latter allegedly attacked Shah with a blade and fled. Shah, who received stab wounds to his abdomen and hands, is being treated at AIIMS Trauma Centre, said police.

In his complaint, Shah’s friend, Krishan Chand, who also suffered a minor injury on his wrist, said, “We noticed a man trying to touch the pocket of Shah’s trousers. As we tried to push him off, another man whipped out a surgical blade and stabbed Shah twice and attacked me as well. After people started shouting, the men fled.”

The incident took place near the university campus and Shah was rushed to a hospital by Krishan, said police.

Ahmed alleged: “The bus did not stop and the conductor didn’t help… my brother and his friend got out and took a friend’s car to go to the hospital.”

Ahmed alleged that minutes before the incident, Shah had realised the men were pickpockets. “He was robbed of his phone months ago near the campus. He saw the men and recognised one of them… When one of the accused tried to touch his trousers, he resisted and even tried to catch the men,” said Ahmed.

DCP (South East) Chinmoy Biswal said, “We have registered a case against the accused under IPC sections 324 and 34 at New Friends Colony police station. The statement of the victim’s friend has been recorded.”
