HYDERABAD: Karimnagar MP
Bandi Sanjay of BJP on Thursday moved a privilege motion before Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla alleging that he was physically assaulted by cops in Karimnagar during a rally. He also approached NHRC, which registered a case.
Sanjay alleged that cops assaulted him during a funeral procession of TSRTC driver N Babu in Karimnagar on November 1 and submitted video evidence and newspaper clippings along with photographs to the speaker.
“The speaker has directed an inquiry by privileges committee chairman
Sushil Kumar Singh and sought a report at the earliest,” Sanjay said, adding that the speaker had assured him of action against the cops. The MP also submitted a memorandum to parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi on the alleged physical assault on him. In the notice of privilege, Sanjay mentioned several police officers responsible for the attack. Among those named were Karimnagar commissioner of police V Satyanarayana, additional DCP Sanjeev Kumar, Armed Reserve commandant Sanjeev, Armed Reserve ACP Nagaiah, inspector Anjaiah and other cops.
“Police at the behest of the state government acted in a high-handed manner and prevented me from participating in the last rites of the driver. The cops wantonly used force and targeted me. One of the police officers caught hold of my collar and slapped me on my right cheek. Other police personnel abused me in Telugu and threatened me with serious consequences,” he said in his complaint.
