PATNA: In a first at any government hospital in the state, doctors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna (AIIMS-P) have successfully performed scoliosis surgery using 3-D printing on a 10-year-old girl from Buxar.
The surgery was performed with financial support from the state government under the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund as the patient belonged to below poverty line (BPL) category. After undergoing surgery for about six hours with neuromonitoring held on October 30, the patient was put under observation for a week.
“The girl, Anshu Kumari of Samhar village in Buxar, is now fine with her straightened spine.
She is now able to walk well,” said Dr Avinash Kumar, assistant professor at AIIMS-P, who along with Dr Prabhat Agrawal, another assistant professor of orthopaedic department, carried out the surgery using screws and rods to straighten her spine. They claimed it was the first successful scoliosis surgery performed at any government hospital in Bihar and Jharkhand.
Avinash said the girl was suffering from congenital scoliosis due to hemivertebra leading to deformity in the backbone, which was gradually increasing with age. “The surgery needed precision using different instruments and neuromonitoring for detection of any neurological insult and the 3-D printing to analyse and plan the work,” he said.
Dr Prabhat said many people were either ignorant of surgical correction of deformed backbone within certain age or were unable to meet the high cost ranging between Rs6 and 8 lakh in some private hospitals.
“However, it was the state’s financial help of around Rs1.50 lakh that facilitated her surgery at the AIIMS-P,” he said.
“Hundreds of children are suffering from this disease in Bihar and some of them got treated successfully at AIIMS, Delhi. Now, the treatment is available at the AIIMS-P also,” added Agrawal.
Others who were part of the surgery included Dr Ajit and Dr Madhukant, anaesthetists, Dr Charan Teja V and Dr Roshan Mohammad, assistant surgeons.
