PUNE: The husband of a 55-year-old brain-dead woman donated her vital organs, including lungs, liver and kidneys, at a hospital in Kolhapur on Friday, giving a fresh lease of life to four ailing persons.
The lungs will benefit a 65-year-old woman suffering from lung failure and undergoing intensive treatment at a hospital in Mumbai. The liver and kidneys will benefit needy patients enrolled for transplants with the state-run Sassoon and Jehangir hospitals in Pune, and Apollo hospital in Nashik.
The donor, a homemaker, had suffered intracranial bleeding.
“She was comatose. She could not be revived despite treatment. She was declared brain dead around 1.30pm on November 7,” said ZTCC’s transplant coordinator Aarti Gokhale.
“The woman’s blood group was A positive. There was no suitable recipient for the heart in Pune and other parts of the state,” she said.
Doctors from Global Hospital in Mumbai reached Kolhapur and retrieved both the lungs of the woman for transplant into the 65-year-old woman. “The liver and kidneys were transported to respective hospitals in Pune and Nashik in an ambulance,” Gokhale said.
Spine surgeon Ajay Chandanwale, the dean of Sassoon hospital, said, “The recipient of the liver is a 24-year-old patient of liver cancer.”
