The air quality has suddenly become too hazardous for the residents of Patna in the past 15 days. Although the pollution level is lower than that of our national capital, it is much higher than the safe level. People have started using air-purifying masks before stepping out for any work.
The sale of masks have increased considerably in the local markets. These are priced between Rs 80 and Rs 3,500, depending on the quality.
Subodh Ranjan, a medical-shop owner from Khagaul Road, said, “Due to increase in the demand of masks, I have brought different kinds of air-purifying masks for my customers. However, the sale of surgical masks are more than the rest. Only those, who are suffering from lung disorders or any breathing issues, spend more on buying good-quality masks.”
Though a variety of masks are available, doctors suggest that people must always use certified masks. Dr Diwakar Tejaswi, a city-based physician, said, “Sometimes, I see people using surgical masks because they are easily available at medical shops and are also pocket-friendly. However, such masks are of no use when the pollution level is marked severe. Surgical masks can only filter dust particles. Therefore, people must use masks that can filter harmful particles in the air.”
Using poor quality masks is just a waste of money, feels Dr Sushil Kumar, a physician. He said, “A bit of research must be done before purchasing a mask. Most people are unaware of the importance of certified masks. I request people not to risk their health.”
