Thaw yoga to offer special class for vets on Veterans Day

A local yoga studio is offering a class for military veterans as part of the Veterans Yoga Project, a nationwide program to raise awareness of post-traumatic stress and the power of yoga as a tool for healing.

Thaw Yoga is offering a donation yoga class at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, as a way to thank veterans for their service to the country, said Christa Gunn, who owns and operates Thaw Yoga, 623 S. 48th St.

The class is a non-heated, all-levels yoga class, which is open to everyone, according to Gunn, who said donation-based classes will raise funds for yoga programs for veterans and their families.

Consistent yoga and meditation practices have proven to be beneficial for veterans who are dealing with post-traumatic stress symptoms, said Daniel Libby, clinical psychologist and executive director of the Veterans Yoga Project, noting that more than 2 million American veterans are struggling with PTS.

The sixth annual Veterans Yoga Project Gratitude Week, Nov. 8-18, involves hundreds of teachers across the country. It was launched in 2014 with 96 classes in 25 states. Last year, 500 classes were taught across all 500 states. The week-long event has raised more than $326,000 in the past five years.
