Telangana recorded over 13K accidental deaths in 2016

HYDERABAD: Telangana witnessed 13,850 accidental deaths as per the recently released ‘Accidental Deaths and Suicides Report 2016’. According to the report, 4,18, 222 cases of accidental deaths were recorded across India in 2016.
Accidental deaths have been grouped under two broad categories — deaths due to forces of nature and deaths due to other causes.
The rate of accidental deaths (per lakh of the population) remained unchanged at 32.8% in 2016 as compared to 2015, though in absolute terms accidental deaths across the country rose to around 4.18 lakh from 4.13 lakh.
A total of 292 people died across the state due to causes attributable to the forces of nature, while the number of such deaths across India stands at 8,684. While over 13,288 persons were killed in accidents due to other causes, including deliberate or negligent conduct of human beings, 4.9 lakh deaths were recorded under the same category.
In Telangana, no deaths were recorded due to cold or cyclone, whereas 74 people were killed by lightning. As many as 38 people died due to collapse of a structure, while 1,266 people drowned, 1,232 died by accidently slipping into a water body and 666 people died of electrocution. A total of 763 deaths due to explosions were recorded, while 56 persons died after falling from vehicles.
As per the latest NCRB data, suicide rate in cities was higher at 13 than the all-India rate of 10.3. Family problems (other than those related to marital issues) accounted for 29.2% of the 1.31 lakh suicides recorded across the country in 2016, while suicides due to illnesses was 17.1% of the total number of suicides.
