PATNA: Justice Sanjay Karol would take oath as the 43rd Chief Justice of Patna high court at Raj Bhavan around 10am on Monday.
Justice Karol was earlier posted as Chief Justice of Tripura high court. Justice Karol reached Patna on Saturday and visited Mahavir Temple near Patna Junction, Bankipur Catholic Church, Takhat Sri Harimandir Ji Sahib Gurdwara in Patna City and Maner Sharif.
Justice Karol was born and brought up in Himachal Pradesh.
He was made a judge of Himachal Pradesh high court on March 8, 2007. Later, he was appointed as Chief Justice of Tripura high court on November 9, 2018. Justice Karol had also been on the senior panel of central government in the Supreme Court and served as advocate general of Himachal Pradesh for five years before becoming a judge.
The Supreme Court Collegium recommended him for the Patna high court Chief Justice post on October 17. Incumbent Chief Justice Amreshwar Pratap Sahi will join as the Chief Justice of Madras high court. The collegium had also recommended the transfer of Justice Rakesh Kumar from Patna to Andhra Pradesh high court.
The three recommendations were made following the controversy over Justice Rakesh Kumar order for a CBI inquiry into the lower court bribery case and judicial inquiry into conditions leading to granting of bail to scam accused retired IAS officer KP Ramaiah on August 28. His order was nixed by a special 11-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Sahi the very next day.
The central government notified their transfers on October 30.
