Geologist to share 'violent formation' history of Lake Tahoe with Carson City Leisure Hour Club
Western Nevada College faculty professor Dr. Winnie Kortemeier will share her expertise of the violent formation of Lake Tahoe with members of the Leisure Hour Club at the Club’s next meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 20.
Dr. Kortemeier, a long-time resident of Carson City, is a Western Nevada College geoscience faculty member. She holds a Bachelor's degree from Furman University, a Masters from Arizona State University, and a PhD from the University of Nevada – Reno. All of the degrees are in geology.
As part of her academic career, she has completed significant research on the geology of the Lake, including her doctoral research on the youngest volcanoes at Tahoe. Most recently, she spent part of this past summer deploying a remote submersible with a team of researchers to explore Tahoe's underwater rock formations.
If you would like to attend this event, please contact the Club’s reservation chair at (775) 400-2647 or LHCreservations@gmail.com no later than 5 pm on Sunday, November 17 to make your reservation. The meeting is preceded by a buffet dinner at 6:00 pm in the Carson Nugget Capitol Ballroom. Reservations for the meeting and dinner are required.
The Leisure Hour Club, established in September of 1896, is Carson City’s oldest continuously meeting social organization. Celebrating its 124th year, the organization is focused on its goal of promoting knowledge of important issues, science, music and literature.
