SPORTS SHORTS: Drake’s Rhine MVC Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS — Drake’s women basketball player Sara Rhine was honored as the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week.

It is the second-straight year that Rhine was won the league’s first weekly honor of the season.

Rhine helped lead Drake to a 2-0 start on the season after defeating South Dakota State and Iowa State this past weekend.

The Eldon, Mo., native averaged 24 points, eight rebounds, one block and one steal in the wins. In addition, Rhine shot 71.3 percent from the field, 75 percent from the 3-point line and 81.3 percent from the free-throw line.

It is the 10th MVC Player of the Week honor in Rhine’s career, which ties Wanda Ford for fourth in MVC history.

ISU’s Haliburton honored by Big 12

AMES — Iowa State guard Tyrese Haliburton was named Big 12 Player of the Week after the sophomore guard averaged 13.5 points and 13 assists in two games last week for the Cyclones.

The Oshkosh, Wis., native also averaged seven rebounds, four steals, and shot 52.4 percent from the field and 40 percent behind the arc.

Haliburton had 12 points, 14 assists, seven rebounds and six steals in the team’s win over Mississippi Valley State. He followed with 15 points, 12 assists, seven rebounds and two assists against Oregon State. Notably, Haliburton had 12 assists without a turnover, which tied Iowa State’s school record.
