Man dies while cleaning sewage tank in Chennai shopping mall

The 25-year-old had jumped into the tank to rescue his brother and another man, who had fainted inside

A 25-year-old man reportedly died of asphyxiation while he was cleaning a sewage tank in a mall in Royapettah early on Tuesday. Police said the victim has been identified as Arunkumar.

According to police, at 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Dhandapani, a contractor, along with five daily-wage workers from Triplicane entered the basement area of the shopping mall and began cleaning.

Initially, one of the workers, Ranjit Kumar and another person entered the tanks that stored sewage. As the two persons fainted inside, Arunkumar, Ranjit Kumar’s brother jumped into the tank in an attempt to rescue them. Though the two who were inside managed to climb up, Arunkumar fainted inside.

The others managed to rescue Arunkumar and rushed him to Government Royapettah Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

A senior police officer said the cause of death can be ascertained only after a post-mortem examination. The post-mortem is being conducted at the hospital. Further investigations are on.
