Star Australia batsman Steve Smith shifted gears to the red-ball format ahead of two-match Test series against Pakistan with a hundred in the Sheffield Shield. However, this was Steve Smith's slowest century of his first-class career as he took 290 balls for his 42nd first-class ton.

The next slowest ton of Smith's career - a 261-ball century at the Gabba in the 2017/18 Ashes series - was considerably faster than his marathon effort over Monday and Tuesday.

Smith shared 82-runs stand for the 2nd wicket with Daniel Solway to help New South Wales cross the 300-run mark. During the innings, Smith also added 141 runs for the third wicket with Moises Henriques.

However, Smith got out in a bizarre fashion as the umpire judged him out when the New South Wales' batsman was trying to play an uppercut off Marcus Stoinis' delivery and the wicketkeeper Josh Inglis was standing up (near the stumps).

The decision from the umpire to give him out left Smith stunned as he was clearly not happy with the dismissal. Smith ended his innings on 103 from 295 balls which guided NSW to the formidable score of 4/314 on Day 2.

Smith has had an exceptional year so far, with 774 runs in just four Tests, including three centuries and as many half-centuries across seven innings. He is the top run-scorer in Tests in 2019 so far, despite having batted in just one series, the 2019 Ashes. He has also played at least three games less than any other player in the top five.

Smith's numbers against Pakistan in the longest format of the game are pretty impressive: two hundreds and five fifties in seven Tests, including a marathon 165* in Melbourne in 2017.
