Combat boots look comfortable, sturdy and bad-ass, and the old-school military style is back with the likes of Katrina Kaif wearing it to complete her outfit

Combat boots transcend all boundaries since they form part of military uniforms worldwide, thanks to their sturdy build, strong grip and lasting characteristics. Usually made with leather, the laced variants have also made their way into fashionistas' wardrobes. "Most recently, they've found a place in people's airport looks — you can run in them. They look great — especially when paired with a jacket, an essential in flights," suggests city-based stylist Aastha Sharma. Take, for example, Katrina Kaif, who has paired it with short dresses and long ones with deep slits. It is definitely an essential that she prefers to reuse. Here's how to pull this look off.

Spice it up

  • Pick a pair with embellishments to give the look more edge. Spikes work best, but you can also choose one with other patterns as long as the design isn't too huge.
  • Pick a dark pair and avoid more than two matching shades of embellishments.
  • A layered look is cool — a leather jacket or a trench coat is ideal. If not, a flow-y cape works.
  • Avoid a printed pair.

Dapper grunge

Deepika

  • Plain, black combats go with just about anything — a pair of denim shorts, a long dress or even a short, blingy one.
  • Give your outfit a nostalgic spin by picking a two-piece. A belted, long shirt and pants.
  • Make sure you tuck in the ends of your bottoms inside the boots or it will take away from the look.
  • Wear this with a pair of shades and a backpack/ bag that doesn't look delicate.

Brown wave

Katrina

  • Move away from the quintessential black pair and pick a faded chestnut and mahogany brown one. The more tattered it looks, the better.
  • Pair it with dark jeans, jeggings or tights. Avoid denim and refrain from distressed options.
  • Go easy on the make-up as it will take away from the look. Don't style your hair; keep it messy.
  • Avoid wearing bling.

Man's world

John

  • Men can pair it with almost anything, but make sure you don't lace up the boots completely. Leave them slightly loose.
  • A camouflage or dark coloured pair of pants and a solid T-shirt works best.
  • Don't wear it to a formal event. This also isn't an option if you're wearing a suit or a shirt.
  • Team it up with a non-blingy kurta and denim.
