The M56 in Cheshire is currently experiencing severe delays of at least 60 minutes above usual journey times. All lanes were been stopped to allow the fire service to work at scene and two lanes remain closed.

At approximately 11am there was a multiple vehicle collision on the eastbound carriageway which blocked lanes 2 and 3. 

Lanes 2 and 3 (of 3) have been closed within J12 (Runcorn) and the queue of traffic (approximately five miles) is back to J14 (Ellesmere Port). 

Earlier a cyclist was hit by a car in Walton.

Police said the accident between the BMW and pedal bike happened around 6.30am on Warbreck Moor - a well known road into the city.

The cyclist was taken to hospital with a  serious head injury and roads closed for several hours.

Police tweeted: "Motorists please be advised due to a serious road traffic collision on the A59 Warbreck Moor there are currently road closures in place between Erl Street and Hooton Road as investigations are carried out. Please avoid the area or find an alternative route."

Closures are also in place around Albany Road and Hooton Road.

Mersey Ferries were suspended until noon and a fallen tree blocked Roe Lane/Manchester Road in Southport. Problems with the overhead wires in Ditton has caused delays to trains between Liverpool and Crewe.
