Cardiff City have stepped up their pursuit of Neil Warnock's successor as the aftermath of the manager's departure rumbles on into its second day.

On Monday, the club announced that Warnock would leave the club after just over three years in charge.

Candidates have been identified and other have been ruled out, while there has even been a suggestion that the structure of the club at board level could shift.

Here is the Cardiff City news from today.

Cardiff City narrow candidates down to just two names

Cardiff City have narrowed down the candidates for Neil Warnock's successor to Neil Harris and Lee Bowyer, WalesOnline has learned.

We understand that the club have whittled down a longlist of candidates to just two names and are hoping to appoint Warnock's replacement within the next 72 hours.

Warnock handed in his resignation following the 1-0 Severnside derby defeat on Sunday and has wished the next manager every success in the job.

While a number of popular candidates have been touted since Warnock's departure, Chris Hughton and Craig Bellamy among them, we can reveal that Harris and Bowyer are the only two people in serious contention for the job.

Cardiff City chief would welcome a director of football

Cardiff City would welcome the implementation of a director of football following Neil Warnock's departure, chairman Mehmet Dalman has said.

Dalman has hinted that any would-be manager could well find themselves working with a sporting director.

Dalman shoulders most of that responsibility on the board — which is made up of him, chief executive Ken Choo, executive director Steve Borley and four non-executive directors — and has said he would welcome the addition of someone with a broader footballing knowledge.

The truth behind that Robert Earnshaw social media post

Former Cardiff City striker Robert Earnshaw has played down an imminent coaching return to the Bluebirds, and says he's returned to South Wales to consider his options ahead of making his next move.

Earnshaw recently left his role as assistant coach at Fresno FC, and posted a picture of the entrance to the Severn Bridge on his social media channels on Monday afternoon, just before confirmation of Neil Warnock's departure

It was a move that sent the rumour mill into overdrive, although the player himself said he was back in the Welsh capital for both personal and professional reasons.

Plenty of City fans were hopeful of a glorious return to the club, however we understand that will not be the case.
