Of the over 70,000 autorickshaws plying on Pune roads, only 3,000 have pasted QR code stickers as mandated by the state transport department more than seven months ago.

The QR code which is to be pasted on these vehicles, contains information pertaining to the vehicle, its ownership as well as name and contact details of the driver, among other things. The QR code also makes it easier to lodge complaints against the vehicle. Apart from helping passengers, the QR code system will help the transport department weed out illegal taxis and autorickshaws.

According to officials at the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO), of the 72,517 autorickshaws on Pune city roads, only 3,000 auto-rickshaws have implemented this system. “Over 69,000 autorickshaws are yet to get them,” said an RTO official.

The RTO had announced the scheme in April this year. In 2017, to curb various complaints such as fare refusals, excess fares and rude behaviour of taxi and auto drivers, the authority had asked the transport commissioner to design stickers that will contain the details of permit holders and helpline numbers in either Marathi or Hindi. However, no deadline had been set for permit holders to display the sticker.

The number of autorickshaws in the city has increased after old permit rules were scrapped on June 17, 2018. “The QR code sticker is mandatory for all autorickshaws. We have asked autorickshaw drivers to use it. We have issued a notice to those not using it,” said a senior officer of RTO.
