SECUNDERABAD: From broken furniture to clothes and mattresses, residents of eastern corridor from Secunderabad and LB Nagar zones discarded the largest quantity of scrap waste during the 10 days special drive launched by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
Concluded on Tuesday, the GHMC’s special drive was intended to collect scrap waste from across the city. Overall, the East zone collected 132 metric tonnes of waste.
The highest amount of scrap was collected from LB Nagar and Secunderabad to the tune of 80.30 metric tonnes and 51.77 metric tonnes respectively. This includes e-waste, broken furniture, clothes, mattresses, plastic, hazardous and glass material etc.

“Residents in Secunderabad were more active in giving away scrap as many of them dumped it in open plots and nalas or drains before we launched the special drive,” said Srinivas, an in-charge at a collection centre.
Last year, GHMC authorities found that 40 per cent of the nalas and drains were choked with plastic, glass material among other waste.
According to data shared by the GHMC, residents of LB Nagar and Secunderabad gave away broken furniture and clothes and mattresses in large numbers. While the LB Nagar zone collected 38 metric tons of broken furniture, Secunderabad collected 25.23 metric tons. Similarly, the two zones together collected over 20 metric tons of clothes and mattresses.

Many residents demanded the GHMC designate more of such permanent spots where they could go and discard the waste. “We need such special drives once in two months so that we can discard and recycle our waste,” said Pranitha Sampath, a resident of HMT Nagar in LB Nagar.
Serilingampally collected 22.098 metric tonnes, Kukatpally collected 23.508 metric tonnes and Khairatabad collected 15.376 metric tonnes. GHMC will be recycling the scrap waste and will only dump the items which cannot be recycled.
