BENGALURU: A 27-year-old software engineer and her cab driver were killed after their car, rear-ended by another car, jumped the median only to collide head on with a BBMP truck coming from the opposite direction on the elevated expressway to KIA on Monday afternoon.
Akanksha Gupta of Whitefield and Swamy, 34, from RT Nagar died instantly.
According to police, Akanksha, a senior software engineer with a private firm in Whitefield, had returned from a trip to her hometown Sonpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday afternoon and was heading to her paying guest accommodation in Swamy’s cab when the accident took place near Venkatala.

“Another cab heading towards the city rammed Swamy’s car from the rear. As a result, Gupta’s cab jumped the median, toppled and collided head on with a BBMP truck moving towards the airport. Passengers in the other car escaped with minor injuries,” police said. The truck driver fled the scene leaving behind his vehicle. Police, however, arrested him later and identified him as Venkatesh Kumar.
“BBMP driver Kumar’s vehicle was moving in the extreme right lane-meant for fast moving vehicles. Had he been moving in the third lane, dedicated for slow moving vehicles including trucks, the fatalities could have been prevented,” police said.
