No Spider-Man standalone movies for Disney+. At least for the time being, it looks as though the Marvel Cinematic Universe will never be fully complete on Disney+. The new streaming service recently launched in the U.S. and, though the early hours were quite rocky, things have settled down and subscribers can now watch the plethora of Marvel content available, which includes a ton of classic and current animated shows, as well as more than a dozen MCU movies, with more on the way over the next few months. But, sadly, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home won't be coming to the service.

According to a new report, Disney doesn't currently have plans to bring either of the Tom Holland Spidey movies to the streaming service, at least not anytime soon. This, it would seem, will also extend to Spider-Man 3, which is currently in the works and will hit theaters in summer 2021. Head of content and marketing for Disney+ Ricky Strauss had this to say about it.

"We love our friends at Sony, but we don't have any plans to have the live-action Spider-Man movies on Disney+. We will have all the Spider-Man animated shows that we did so they'll be on there under the Marvel banner. But who knows what can happen in the future?"

The situation, as it exists presently, is that Sony Pictures owns the movie rights to Spider-Man. Disney has a deal to co-produce the solo movies with Sony via Marvel Studios, which allows for the character to be a part of the MCU. But that does mean, ultimately, the movies are owned by Sony, which means Disney would have to cut some sort of (likely very expensive) rights deal to bring Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home to Disney+. So, unfortunately, those entries will need to be purchased or streamed elsewhere.

As many Marvel fans are surely aware, the situation between Sony and Disney recently got a bit messy. For a time, the two studios parted ways and Sony intended to make a third Spider-Man solo movie with Tom Holland set outside the MCU, meaning the MCU would have to explain away Peter Parker's absence. Luckily, the two sides came back to the negotiating table and worked out a deal to extend the contract for one more solo movie, as well as a currently undisclosed MCU movie that Holland will appear in.

With that in mind, not being able to include both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far from Home on Disney+ reveals yet another reason why the situation, at present, is inideal for Disney. Disney+ currently has Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Thor: The Dark World, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame available to stream.
