Neighbour smothers Dombivli teen for resisting rape

KALYAN: A 19-year-old TYBSc student from Dombivli was smothered to death by a youth living in her building after she resisted his rape attempt. The incident took place on Tuesday.
According to police, the accused, a CCTV technician, entered the victim’s flat claiming he wanted to take away a squirrel that had sneaked in and then tried to sexually assault her.However, when she fought him off, he used a pillow to smother and kill her, fearing she would otherwise go to the police.
The murder was discovered only when the girl’s mother, who works in Navi Mumbai, returned home at night.
The mother approached Dombivli police, who found that the victim had received a call from a friend that afternoon. The friend informed cops that the girl had told her about the accused coming over.
On questioning, the man, who has been arrested, reportedly confessed to the crime. According to SI Suresh Aher, he said he had smothered her as she refused to have sex with him.
