PUNE: The city is all set to get its new mayor from the general category for the next two and half years. Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation will get a woman mayor from the general category.
The state urban development department drew the lots for 27 civic bodies in the state on Wednesday in Mumbai.
The general category reservation is likely to pose a tough challenge for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while selecting a candidature for the mayor's post.
The party has over 98 corporators in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
Sources in the party said that former standing committee chairman Muralidhar Mohol, senior corporator Hemant Rasne, Varsha Tapkir, Manjusha Nagpure, leader of house in PMC Shrinath Bhimale, and many others were the front runners in the mayoral race. Mohol, Rasne and Bhimale were willing to contest the recent assembly polls but were denied tickets.
The election for the mayor's post is expected to be held next week. PMC officials will announce the details of the election programme in a few days.
The BJP gave mayorship to its senior corporator Mukta Tilak after an emphatic win in the 2017 civic polls. A senior functionary from BJP said that party leaders have ample choices since a candidate from the general category will be chosen for the post of mayor for the remaining term of 2.5 years. The leader, however, said that it was unlikely that the post would go to a woman corporator once again.
BJP's city unit president Madhuri Misal said, "We will soon hold consultations with the party's senior leaders to decide our candidate. There is a huge list of aspirants."
