PUNE: A woman and her one-year-old son suffered burns after a fire broke out in their rented flat at a housing society at Meethanagar in Kondhwa around 1.10am on Thursday for not extinguishing a candle properly.
The woman, Afsana Shaikh, and her son, Ovais, are undergoing treatment in a private hospital. Their condition is stable.
Fire officer Prakash Gore from the Kondhwa sub-fire station said, “Afsana, her husband, Nabi, and their sons Ovais (1) and Bilal Raza (3) were fast asleep in the bedroom when the fire broke out in the hall.
Its flames enveloped the household items. The panicked family woke up after thick black fumes entered the bedroom.”

Nabi threw one of their sons down from bedroom window, who was caught safely by other residents of society
He said, “Nabi opened the window of his first floor flat and threw Bilal outside. The boy escaped unhurt because he was caught by the building residents. Nabi also jumped out of the window. His wife, Afasna, and Ovais suffered minor burns after they rushed out.”
A resident of the society alerted the fire brigade control room about the incident after he saw thick black fumes emanating from Afsana’s flat. A fire tender from Kondhwa rushed to the spot but it could not reach the Temple Tune housing society behind Sheetal fuel station because it was on a narrow lane.

Gore said, “We parked the fire tender on the main road. Affixing eight hosepipes, we launched a fire fighting operation and gained control over the flames. We completely doused the fire at 1.28am. The mother-son duo were rushed to Sassoon hospital for treatment before we reached the spot.”
He added, “The firemen removed three domestic gas cylinders to safety. The fire could have been disastrous if the cylinders were not removed.”
Nabi’s brother, Gaibi Raza Shaikh, told TOI, “A candle was lit in the main hall and it was not doused properly. The impact of the fire was such that the flames came in contact with clothes and household goods were gutted.”
He said, “The building’s residents raised an alarm and broke window panes with stones. Nabi and Bilal jumped out of the window, but my sister-in-law, Afsana, and her son, Ovais, suffered burns. We have now shifted them to a private hospital for treatment. The fire did not cause damage to goods in the kitchen and the bedroom.”
