SPACE CRUNCH: The move has been undertaken to curb congestion on roads due to illegal parking
PUNE: Around 1,500 motorists are being fined daily on an average by the Pune traffic police for parking violations across the city.
Action is being taken against those for violating the P1/P2 norm, parking vehicles on footpaths and in no-parking zones, and for double parking.
According to the Pune traffic police, jammers are fixed on around 500 vehicles daily, while nearly 700 vehicles are towed away, apart from action under the provisions of the PMC Act for parking on footpaths.

While the Pune traffic police have intensified action against wrongly-parked vehicles, deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Pankaj Deshmukh stated that the space crunch in the city was a fundamental problem and one of the main reasons for the parking crisis in the city.
“The number of vehicles on road is only increasing and people are finding it increasingly difficult to park. To overcome the space crunch, we have announced one-ways, P1/P2 regulations and other measures, but they are all insufficient,” he said.
Deshmukh stated that the issue of parking and recommendations to improve the situation were raised during a meeting with officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation and Pune Smart City Development Corporation Limited on Monday. “We hope that some headway will be made soon into the implementation of the parking policy,” he said.

The PMC general body had approved the parking policy in March 2018, but the provisions, including pay and park, development of multi-storeyed parking complexes are yet to be implemented.
Mayor Mukta Tilak confirmed that the PMC is set to re-introduce the pay and park in the city in the coming days. The civic body has identified over 30 roads, which will soon have pay and park facilities.
Tilak said, “Discussions regarding shortlisting the streets where pay and park will be implemented and various proposals of the Pune traffic police with regard to parking and parking policy will be held during a meeting scheduled on November 18. We are expecting things to get rolling after the meeting.”
