Lionel Messi scored on his return to international football to earn Argentina a win over their South American rivals Brazil.

The two sides contested a feisty friendly encounter in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and a frantic opening quarter of an hour saw two penalties awarded.

Man City striker Gabriel Jesus was clumsily hauled down inside the box by Leandro Paredes, after Tottenham's Juan Foyth had dallied on the ball.

Jesus couldn't capitalise though, as he spurned his spot kick wide of the post after nine minutes.

Soon after Argentina were given a penalty of their own, when Alex Sandro fouled Messi inside the box.

The Argentina skipper saw his first attempt saved well by Brazil keeper Alisson, but was quick to slot home the rebound on the 14-minute mark.

Messi - who is making his first appearance after a three-month suspension - almost added another before the break, but Alisson denied him well low to his left.

After a fairly even first half, Argentina weathered some early pressure in the second, before going on the offensive.

Alisson was called into action a number of times, saving two long-range free-kicks from Messi, before tipping over Paredes's dipping effort.

Lautaro Martinez had the best chance to extent his sides lead, but lashed his shot over the bar, as Messi's goal eventually proved to be the winner.

FT: Brazil 0-1 Argentina

That’s it then. The final whistle blows and it’s a solid win for Argentina.

They were good value for it, and were the better side in the second half after a tightly contested opening 45.

Lionel Messi’s rebound from his missed penalty the difference, and Gabriel Jesus will be disappointed he couldn’t convert his own spot kick minutes earlier, which may have earned them a draw.

There was almost a twist in the tail though!

Wesley, on as a sub for Brazil, doesn’t react to the cross and the ball runs away from him with the goal at his mercy.

Argentina defend their own box well to head the ball clear and draw a foul to alleviate the pressure.

A goal for Brazil would have been unjust really, as the Argentine’s have dominated this second half and produced a gritty display worthy of the win.

Coutinho delivers an inviting corner, Silva clashes heads in the process, and the ball ends up back out for another corner.

Forget what I just said. It’s another sub for Argentina as they wind the clock down.

Dominguez on for De Paul this time.

Final change, you imagine, for Argentina, as Martinez departs with Alario on in his place.

Should have scored Martinez, and he’ll be disappointed he didn’t at least hit the target moments ago.

Not completely clear however... as Messi swings a searching cross back in to the far post where Otamendi was arriving.

He took his eye off the ball under pressure and doesn’t connect properly with his header.

Rodriguez hits one this time, and it had some power behind it, but it cannons off a Brazil head for a corner which is headed clear.

Sub for Argentina

Paredes looks dead on hit feet and he heads off to be replaced by Rodriguez.

What a miss!

There’s the chance to settle it, and Martinez has fluffed it.

The corner came in, he controlled it perfectly as space opened up for him with a clear shot at goal, but he hammers it over.

He could rue that one.

Argentina having a real purple patch here and are pressing Brazil back.

Messi at the heart of a move going forward which ends with Tagliafico smashing one over, but they’re a continuous threat.

Alisson is forced into action as Gonzelez meets Tagliafico’s cross to divert a header goalwards.

Shortly after Brazil’s no.1 palms away Paredes’ long-ranger to keep the deficit at just one.

Crunching tackle from Tagliafico. This time he slides in on Militao and gets the ball, and what a cracker it was. Real 90s stuff there.

Ocampos is off for Argentina, Gonzalez on. Just over quarter of an hour left to play.

Discipline

Paredes is given the sixth booking of the game. Yes, it is a friendly.

Richarlison is straight in the mix, tussling with the Argentina defenders and goes down in the box looking for something from the referee, but gets nothing.

Double change for Brazil

Jesus and Willian off, Richarlison and Rodrygo on. Fresh legs up top.

Alisson makes the save at his near post quite comfortably.

Never troubling him that one, and Messi would have perhaps been better served crossing that one in for a teammate.

End-to-end stuff now as Brazil attack, followed by Argentina.

Messi is thrown to the turf again by Silva, and it’s another free-kick in a decent position.

Messi goes close!

Messi has a free-kick in a similar area to the one he scored for Barcelona against Liverpool last season.

But Alisson isn’t beaten this time, tipping the ball over, but it was on target, and from some distance too.

Heavy tackle from Militao on Messi who hits the deck, and the Brazil centre-back is the latest man to receive a yellow.

Sub for Brazil

Lodi is on for Sandro

Bit of ping-pong in the centre circle culminates in Willian been scythed by Tagliafico. That’s his second offence in a few minutes and he’s now in the book.

Argentina counter attack, and it takes a fantastic tackle from Militao to deny Messi.

Ocampos then follows it up with a crashing drive from wide but it sails just over.

It’s all Brazil at the moment as they peg Argentina back in their own third.

Free-kick cleared away, corner headed away, but Brazil are coming back, while Argentina seem happy to sit and allow their opponents onto them.

Tagliafico immediately chops down Fabinho on the right flank. Welcome to the party!

But Brazil have a free-kick in a dangerous area now.

Fabinho on

Foul on Arthur by his Barcelona teammate Messi, with the former now replaced by Liverpool’s Fabinho in midfield.

That could shake things up a little.

Splendid play from Coutinho to skip past two tackles and release Jesus over the top.

The City forward has a glance of goal- but why doesn’t he shoot?!

He cuts back and Argentina are back in numbers, although Willian does eventually get a shot off which is charged down by the defence.

Nice turn from Lo Celso, but he opts to pass when perhaps he should have had a go from distance.

He’s shown some nice touches on the ball tonight though, and any Spurs fans will be buoyed by his performance.

Paredes breaks free down the right but wastes possession with a hopeful cross looking for Messi, who was only just arriving in the box on his own.
