Kids must learn to accept failure: Docs
Hyderabad: Shedding light on the rising number of student suicides in the recent past, experts stressed on the need to normalise ‘failure’. Experts said high levels of stress related to academics affects students the most. They said the fact that parents tend to overprotect kids when they are young also leads to children being unable to accept failure when they grow up.
Talking about the suicide of Inter student, consultant psychologist Dr Vasuprada Kartic said, “It is obvious that she was under high-level of stress.
She would wake up early to go for running, attend college and also prepare for armed forces exam. We have no idea whether she had time to de-stress or meet friends. Children need support when they are preparing for crucial exams.”
Psychologists said even as the pressure on students to perform well builds up, parents and institutions often fail to help them understand that failure is a part of life. “Kids are under tremendous pressure to meet the expectations. Usually, children are overprotected by parents, hence they do not learn how to deal with failure,” said Dr Anita Are, clinical psychologist.
