MUMBAI: A special court on Thursday convicted and sentenced a 38-year-old head ticket examiner with Western Railway to four years’ rigorous imprisonment for overcharging commuters and pocketing the fines collected.
Special judge A S Sayyad found the accused, Nitin Dahate, guilty under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Dahate was also convicted under the Indian Penal Code for destruction of evidence.
He was fined Rs 10,000. Dahate was out on bail.
The accused was arrested by the CBI’s anti-corruption bureau (ACB) on October 2, 2016, from Dadar station on the western suburban line. The prosecution had told the court that the investigating agency had received information that Dahate was collecting excess money from passengers and not depositing the fines with the railways.
The prosecution submitted that on October 2, 2016, a team comprising officers of the CBI ACB, railway vigilance officers and independent panch witnesses, kept a watch on the accused and nabbed him.
