Delhi HC rejects Chidambaram’s bail application

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday denied bail to former union minister P Chidambaram in the INX media money laundering case that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is investigating.

Pronouncing the order in open court, the judge said the allegations against Chidambaram were serious and he played a key and active role in the case.

It also observed that while bail was a right, it will be against public interest and send a wrong signal to society if granted in such cases. The court had reserved its order on Chidambaram’s bail plea on November 8.

Chidambaram was arrested by the CBI in connection with the case on August 21. The CBI had registered a First Information Report on May 15, 2017, alleging irregularities in clearances granted by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to the INX Media group for receiving Rs 305 crore from overseas in 2007 during Chidambaram’s tenure as finance minister.
