PUNE: A policeman on leave jumped into Ambegaon lake on Thursday morning and rescued a woman, who had attempted to end her life following a quarrel with her family.
Saddam Shaikh, a constable attached to the Warje Malwadi police station, had been on leave since Thursday. He was out on his morning walk around 10am, when he noticed a commotion near the lake.
After making some enquires, he learnt that a 25-year-old woman had jumped into the water and was screaming for help.
"When Shaikh asked the onlookers why no one was doing anything to save her life, he did not receive any reply. There were many onlookers along the bank, but no one was ready to help the woman," senior inspector Ashok Kadam said.
Without sparing the situation a second thought, Shaikh handed over his belongings to a bystander, jumped into the lake. "I quickly swam towards the woman, who had nearly started to drown by then," Shaikh said.
He grabbed hold of her and, with some difficulty, brought her towards the bank.
"When I was close to the bank, the woman started flailing. I somehow managed to reach the bank, or I would also have been in trouble," Shaikh said.
"The woman later told the police that she wanted to end her life following a dispute with family members," Shaikh added.
