KONNAGAR: Members of a local club in the Hatirkul locality of Hooghly's Konnagar clashed with police on Friday during an eviction drive under a Calcutta High Court order.
Executing the court order, a large team from Chandannagore Police reached the area to evict the club, which had encroached a field in Hatirkul.
Members of the club came out and tried to stop the cops. Owner of the plot, Amit Banerjee - former Trinamool vice chairman of Konnagar Municipality - had moved high court seeking vacation of the plot by the 'encroachers'.
The court had ruled in his favour. During the clash, members of the Trinamool-backed club were allegedly lathi-charged by police.
Chandannagore CP Humayun Kabir said: "We were merely executing a high court order and vacated the field."
