PUNE: The Bund Garden police on Friday booked the parents of a two-month-old baby girl for abandoning her beneath the water tank on the premises of the Sassoon General Hospital.
Sub-inspector R A Godse of the Bund Garden police said, “Some visitors and security guards spotted a baby girl lying beneath the water tank of the hospital on November 4. They alerted the police soon after. We waited for a few days, thinking that her parents would visit the hospital in search of her.
We decided to book the unidentified parents when no one came forward.”
Godse said nobody at the hospital saw anyone abandoning the baby beneath the water tank. He said the baby was healthy and had been admitted to the Sassoon hospital. Godse said the police had no lead so far on the identity of the baby’s parents and under what circumstances was she deserted.
“We checked the records of the newborn baby girls across various hospitals in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad area. The aim was to trace the hospital in which the baby was born and to figure out her parents. However, there has been no progress yet,” sub-inspector Godse said.
He said the police were checking the CCTV footage of various spots near the hospital. “We suspect whoever abandoned the baby might have done it either because of the infant’s gender or having been born out of an illicit relationship,” he added.
