KOLKATA: A 74-year-old retired sub-inspector of Kolkata Police, who had taken voluntarily retirement from the force, allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the fourth floor of his four-storey apartment on Govindapur Road adjacent to Jodhpur Park around 8.40am on Saturday.
Police said the victim, identified as Asim Mukherjee, suffered from depression and had attempted suicide twice before.
His neighbours claimed that of late, he had been especially distressed after his wife was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Mukherjee had joined the Kolkata Police in 1966 and took a voluntary retirement in 1973, when he was a sub-inspector. He then joined Indian Oil and later, served at a leading private hospital near Ruby Park.
The police said on Saturday morning, the guard who was on duty at their residence, Sri Niketan Apartment, heard a loud thud of something falling. “He ran to the spot to find Mukherjee’s blood-spattered body. His daughter, who lives nearby, was alerted and she rushed to the house immediately,” said police. Cops from the Lake police station have launched an inquiry and sent the body for post-mortem.
“We have not found anything suspicious so far. The post-mortem report will confirm the exact reason for death. The domestic help told us Mukherjee behaved normally after getting up in the morning and had climbed upstairs after 8.15am,” said police, who have refused to confirm whether they had found a suicide note or not.
Police said they would record the statements of the family members and a few others once they were ready to talk. “We have visited the incident spot and collected some pieces of evidence. We are also scanning CCTV images,” said an officer.
