KOLKATA: A 28-year-old helmetless biker returning from a friend’s bachelor party died after he reportedly lost control and rammed into a stationary car on Rashbehari Avenue connector, less than 500 metres from his home, in the wee hours of Sunday.
The youth, Mantu Pal, a building construction supervisor, who bled to death on the road, had no other injury apart from a fractured skull.
He was declared brought dead at MR Bangur Hospital. The victim’s friend and pillion rider, Soumen Adhikari, who also did not wear a helmet, sustained multiple injuries, especially on his head and pelvic region. His condition was stated to be critical.
Paul had left home to attend the party at his friend’s place around 7pm on Saturday, according to his wife, Rumpa. “Till 2.30am, he was at the friend’s place. Even he made a video call as our two-year-old daughter was crying to see him. He told her that he would be returning home soon. But after that, I received a phone call from a friend asking me to rush to the hospital. I did accordingly, only to find that my husband was dead,” said Rumpa, crying inconsolably at her ground floor flat in Bosepukur on Sunday.
Paul was the main breadwinner of his family. He was riding his friend’s bike, a 200cc KTM Duke — the same model that he owns.
“He had taken my husband’s bike to reach home quickly. He was concerned that his daughter was still awake and would not sleep till he returned home,” said Supriya Dolui, wife of the friend whose bike Paul was riding. The victim’s sister Arati Shaw rued that her brother could have been alive, had he worn the helmet.
Police said the accident happened around 3.45am. They suspect that Paul might have been riding the bike under the influence of liquor. Cops are awaiting the post-mortem report for confirmation in this regard.
“We are checking the CCTV footage to find out how the accident happened. But it seems that the rider had lost control and hit a car from behind before he fell,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.
