South Kolkata school to start teachers' training college

KOLKATA: Welland Gouldsmith, which celebrated its 150th year on Sunday, is all set to start a teacher-training college.
The school's 150th year celebrations kicked off with a glittering programme at the Patuli campus on Sunday. School principal Gillian Rosemary Hart, said: "We are ready to begin the teacher-training college now.The state higher education department has promised to give us the no-objection certificate (NOC) soon. By next year, we should be able to start the teacher training course."
The 150-year celebrations was started with a prayer service led by Father Rodney Borneo. This was followed by a colourful cultural program. The participants, who were students from both the BB Ganguly Street and Patuli campuses, performed eastern and western songs and dances. The highlight was a depiction of the school's 150-year journey portrayed by the children through song and dance.
Hart said, "Welland Gouldsmith School on 288, BB Ganguly Street is one of the oldest Anglo Indian Girls School in the country." The school was founded by Rev Joseph Welland and Rev Herbert Gouldsmith 150 years ago. In 2004, Hart established the second Welland Gouldsmith campus at Patuli. But this campus is co-educational and has 1,700 students while the BB Ganguli Street campus is an all-girls' school. Hart, who is also a nominated Anglo Indian member of the state Assembly for 15 years, said: "The BB Ganguly Street campus has around 3,000 girl students on its rolls. We are committed to impart quality education to the girl child. The teacher-training section is being planned with this purposed."
