    India has 15697 ITIs, Uttar Pradesh has the most: Govt

    Besides, government has envisaged setting up of Indian Institute of Skills with unique features that would make them different from the existing setup of ITIs, Polytechnics, and Advanced Training Institutes (ATIs). The union cabinet has approved the proposal of setting up of IISs at three locations in the country.

    In order to enhance employability of trainees graduating from ITIs, from the session 2019-20, duration of curricula of employability skill has been increased from 110 hrs to 160 hours in the first year of ITIs.



    Uttar Pradesh tops the list of states with highest number of industrial training institutes at 3302 followed by Rajasthan (1923), Karnataka (1557), Bihar (1264) and Madhya Pradesh (1167).
    These are part of the 15697 industrial training institutes (ITIs) functioning in the country, affiliated with National Council of Vocational Training, minister of state for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship RK Singh in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

    Industrial training institutes (ITI) are post-secondary schools in India constituted under directorate general of employment & training (DGET), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Union Government to provide training in various trades.

    Admission to the various trades is done every year in August. Under the NCVT guidelines admission in ITIs is made on merit based / written examination. Admission to the private ITIs is done directly.

    Further, in order to enhance employability of trainees graduating from ITIs, from the session 2019-20, duration of curricula of employability skill has been increased from 110 hrs to 160 hours in the first year of ITIs.

    Besides, web based employability skills would be of an additional component of 80 hrs in 2nd year. In addition, MSDE is implementing Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY 2.0) 2016-20 on pan-India basis with an objective to provide skilling to one crore people over four years (2016-2020). Under the scheme, 64.27 lakhs candidates have been trained, out of which 14.43 lakhs have been placed up to November 11.

    Besides, government has envisaged setting up of Indian Institute of Skills with unique features that would make them different from the existing setup of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), Polytechnics, Advanced Training Institutes (ATIs) (which are now known as National Skill Training Institutes).

    The union cabinet has approved the proposal of setting up of IISs at three locations in the country at Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), Mumbai (Maharashtra) and Ahmedabad (Gujarat). “This ministry has requested the government of Gujarat for locating/identifying the land for setting up of IIS at Ahmedabad,” minister RK Singh said.
