Family member reactivated subscription to communication, navigation device on boat, officials say

The U.S. Coast Guard says the three people onboard a sailboat believed to be in distress are OK. In a tweet Monday, the Coast Guard says it established contact with the sailboat Dove. “With outstanding coordination & cooperation with the families, we were able to confirm their loved ones are not in distress & are continuing their journey south,” Cmdr. Kelly Denning, the search and rescue mission coordinator, said in the tweet.The 40-foot vessel was first reported missing after a 911 call early Saturday from boaters in distress. The Coast Guard determined that the call came from a location 20 miles south of Mount Desert Island. Boats from the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guard, along with aircraft, searched all day Saturday in relatively calm seas and under sunny skies. The search continued Sunday with the airplane. The Coast Guard said the boat was finally located when a family member reactivated a subscription to a communication and navigation device that is on the boat.Once the subscription was renewed, the family member sent the boat a message, officials said.The device also has a GPS system, and the boat's location was placed at 90 nautical miles south of Montauk, New York, the Coast Guard said.Coast Guard officials said they are trying to find out where the boat's next port is so investigators can speak with them.
