Texas high school football player fatally shot as he played video games

A 16-year-old Texas high school football player was shot and killed as he played video games at a house party, according to a report.

Marquel Ellis Jr., a sophomore at Allen High School, was struck by gunfire around 10 p.m. Saturday at a Plano home after a group of people were kicked out, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

The football player was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to the report.

Ellis’ family said he was an “innocent bystander” on a GoFundMe page launched to raise money for his funeral.

“He was (an) innocent bystander playing video games and (his) life was cut” short,” the page said, according to the newspaper.

School officials released a statement Sunday confirming his death.

“We were notified earlier today of the tragic incident that took the life of Marquel Ellis, Jr.,” the school said in a statement. “Marquel was a sophomore at Allen High School. The school has arranged for counselors to be available for students and staff on Monday morning.”
