ISU’s Kolar a semifinalist for John Mackey Award

Charlie Kolar

NEW YORK — Iowa State tight end Charlie Kolar was announced as one of eight semifinalists for the 2019 John Mackey Award.

The John Mackey ward is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end.

The eight semi-finalists were determined by confidential balloting of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee.

The sophomore leads the Big 12 with 41 receptions, 549 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns. Kolar’s receiving yard season total is a school record by a tight end.

Kolar’s Pro Football Focus receiving grade of 90.6 percent is ranked No.1 nationally and his overall offensive grade of 86 percent is second-best among tight ends nationally.

The Norman, Okla. native has an active streak of a touchdown catch in four-straight games which ties him for the third long stretch in school history.

Kolar was also honored as an Academic All-District 6 selection by CoSida as he maintains a 3.98 GPA in mechanical engineering.

The Mackey Award finalists are announced on Nov. 25 and winner will be announced on Dec. 11.
