Loosely translated from Gaelic, Mullach Na Craobhan means “top of the trees” – an appropriate name as this lovely family home sits in an elevated position and enjoys treetop-height views across Loch Linnhe.

Since the turn of this century, the house has belonged to Margaret and Roger Laird.

“The house was built by well-known and highly regarded local builder Roddy Campbell, in 1992,” said Margaret.

“I’m Scottish, and my husband and I had worked in the south of England for a long time.

“The time felt right to come back to Scotland at that time. This house allowed us to ‘come home’ as it had everything we were looking for.”

The detached house is close to Corran Ferry, Onich, Fort William, and has accommodation spread across two floors.

The main reception room is the drawing room, which has spectacular views over the garden and the hills beyond, a wood-burning stove and sliding doors leading into the garden.

The south-facing dining room also has lovely views, a sliding door into the garden and a hatch to the kitchen.

There’s a superb kitchen/dining/family room which has become the hub of the house.

From here there’s direct access on to the patio and garden.

“A few years after we moved in we decided to open up the back of the house internally to create a more open-plan style of living space,” said Margaret.

“We always have family and friends visiting, and the house is great for entertaining.

“It’s easy to have 10 people staying here at the same time, yet you still feel as though you have your own space.

“The accommodation is pretty flexible – we offered B&B for a while – but the layout means you can have privacy at the same time.”

Further accommodation includes a boot room/utility room off the kitchen, which leads into the double garage and off which there is a wet room.

On the first floor, the master bedroom is exceptional and has magnificent views from its balcony. It has a good range of fitted wardrobes and an en suite bathroom, with a separate shower cubicle.

“It has a big skylight window which allows you to lie in your bath and look at the stars, which is lovely,” said Margaret.

There is also a guest bedroom with an en suite shower room and three further bedrooms served by a family bathroom.

The house is surrounded by a lovely wooded garden containing a mixture of silver birch, rowan, conifers and eucalyptus.

In May, drifts of bluebells provide a mass of colour.

Behind the house is a patio, with raised beds, and there is a shed and a kennel.

On the south side of the house is a wooden studio from where you can enjoy further excellent views.

Location-wise it’s ideal for anyone working in the Fort William, Lochaber and Argyll area.

“Pretty close to the top of the driveway there’s a bus stop from where you can catch a bus to Fort William, Glasgow, Skye and Inverness, which means its pretty accessible,” said Margaret.

“The house overlooks the Corran Ferry and we have spent many a happy day catching the ferry – foot passengers go free – and walking the shoreline of the peninsula.

“Here, I always feel like you don’t need to use the car to enjoy yourself as you can simply walk out the door and go into a forest or walk the shoreline.

“There’s always wildlife to see too such as red deer, red squirrels, pine martins, while all sorts of birds are attracted to the trees – it almost feels at times like you are living in a forest.”

On the market at offers over £400,000, is an excellent property with wonderful views.

There’s a nice feel to the house and it is full of happy memories for Margaret and Roger, who have decided it’s time to sell and for some other family to enjoy living in this lovely home.
