Work on Muzaffarpur cancer hospital will start soon: MP
MUZAFFARPUR: The construction work for Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre will start soon, Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) of India secretary K N Vyas has informed Muzaffarpur MP Ajay Nishad through a letter.
Nishad told this newspaper on Tuesday that Vyas had responded to his queries regarding the progress being made for the construction of the hospital-cum-research centre to be set up on the Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) premises here.

“Since the hospital is being set up from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) fund and land for the purpose had been handed over to the AEC nearly a year ago, I sought information about it from the commission. The AEC secretary told me through a letter that the tender for constructing buildings and boundary walls will be finalized in a month and work will be awarded to the selected agency soon thereafter,” the MP said.
He added, “The facility will be a boon for the patients seeking cancer treatment as Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) in Mumbai will run it. All the facilities available at TMH will be made available at the Muzaffarpur centre. Senior surgeons from TMH will visit the Muzaffarpur facility to perform surgeries. A good number of patients from Bihar go to TMH for specialized cancer treatment there.”
Notably, it will be an independent 125-bed cancer hospital with a research centre for cancer. This project will entail an investment of Rs200 crore. A plot of 15 acres of land has already been identified near the SKMCH. TMH will extend technical support to the project.
Nishad said the state government will create a help desk for cancer patients from Bihar at TMH, Mumbai. “The patients’ kin often have to shuttle between Bihar and Mumbai and face problems in availing funds from the Chief Minister’s Medical Relief Fund to avail treatment,” he said.
