NAIHATI: A 28-year-old youth from Asansol escaped with life but suffered deep gashes on his head and face after he was allegedly pushed off a speeding train by a group of mobile-snatchers after taking away his cellphone forcefully.
The incident took place on Balia Express near the Naihati railway station on Tuesday.
A GRP source said Asansol resident Sourabh Majhi, who was visiting a relative at Naihati, boarded the Sealdah-Balia train from Naihati around 1.20pm.
According to a complaint he lodged with the Naihati GRP from his hospital bed, Majhi said he was returning home. “The compartment I boarded was crowded and I had to stand near the door. Soon after, a group surrounded me and one of them suddenly snatched my mobile from my pocket. I tried to put up a fight and take the mobile back but they pushed me off the running train. I landed near the tracks and fell unconscious,” he said.
Locals and GRP personnel took him to Naihati State General Hospital, where seven stitches were administered on his head and face. “He is still undergoing treatment,” said a doctor. A senior GRP officer said, “We took the youth to hospital and have also received his complaint. The nearby GRP stations have been alerted about the gang.”
